I met a gentleman yesterday, a kind and gentle soul, who patiently helped with a smartphone issue at a major brand retail store. He was knowledgeable and proficient as he fixed my mother’s phone.

While waiting for data to be transferred from one device to another we spoke briefly about his wife’s endeavor to become a teacher. It brought to mind my plans over twenty years ago to make a difference in the lives of students, to be an advocate for their needs, and help them reach their full potential.

The pride in his voice and the strength of his wife’s resolve made me hopeful and glad, and I wish her the best as she learns of the struggles and challenges she will be faced with. Those who enter the field of education are prompted by a sense of selflessness and service to mankind and I am happy to know that there are people who wish to continue as guides in our world.

When I began My Teachable Moments, it started as a celebration of joy that would include stories and fun that can be had in a classroom. It evolved, without my willingness originally, into a story of the positives and negatives as experienced by myself through peers, colleagues, administrators, and of course, students.

Unbeknownst to me, it would turn into both a celebratory manuscript and a precautionary tale of a person, a teacher, myself, and the next steps needed in my life.

After many sleepless nights and tear-filled eyes, I’ve decided to leave my endeavor as a public school teacher and delve into the world of helping teachers become more mindful as educators of the values that our society needs. I also plan to work with students in a more personal one-on-one nature to help them develop their own core values that will help them become successful members of society.

I’m not leaving the classroom just yet, as I will move to the college lecture halls and labs as an instructor, to serve humanity in a new way. I will follow a new path as a service-driven individual, as an educator, but also as a mindfulness trainer of teachers and a success coach of children. I am excited about this decision, and I look forward to sharing this journey with you, my dear followers.
